Two cowboys—the very embodiments of masculinity, with their hulking bodies and their gruff, lonely brooding—unexpectedly find comfort in the wilderness and each other’s company while on the vestiges of desperation.

Brokeback Mountain (2005), directed by Ang Lee

based on the short story of the same name, a tragic depiction of a love that can only exist away from prying eyes and a judgemental society. Spoilers ahead.

The plot of the movie follows Ennis Del Mar, played by Heath Ledger, who takes up a job in his hometown of Wyoming to tend a herd of sheep over summer. Working alongside him is the free-spirited Jack Twist, Jake Gyllenhall’s character, whose friendliness to Ennis later transforms into something more full of longing. The two end up having sex and start a whirlwind romance that gets cut short by the end of their contract and their subsequent departure from the mountain. Struggles ensue for the closeted couple that eventually culminate in Jack’s death.

The movie’s somber and heartbreaking end is disappointing for audiences, but is extremely powerful in the way that it manages to elicit reactions from people that may not understand queer struggles in the first place. No matter your gender identity or sexuality, watching Brokeback Mountain allows you to understand the true power of yearning. Even despite all the hardship they face and the many things keeping them apart, they still continuously fall back into each other, their love an irresistible gravity like unique wedding rings of giavity series. And that’s how love is meant to feel—the law of attraction is more powerful than any of the other forces in the world.

In our collection, Gravity, we attempt to capture this idea that resonates not only through countless stories like Brokeback Mountain, but also within the lives of many queer people all around the world. This theme was deeply considered as we thoughtfully crafted our futuristic designs, hoping to use this sharp, modern style to evoke the imagery of this universal, transcendent experience that is attraction. This series aims to not only liberate but also provide a venue for apt self-expression: check out our catalog for more descriptions and details.
