From Broadway star to one of pop’s newest “IT” girls, Renee Rapp has achieved great success on both streaming platforms and the silver screen, when she starred in 2024’s musical remake of the 2010s cult classic Mean Girls. With her widespread influence, it’s no surprise that her coming out as a lesbian on the American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL) made waves in gay circles across the internet, especially because she had previously identified as bisexual for all of her teenage years. This announcement, coupled with her unabashed acceptance of her queer identity, has proved to be significant for both her fans and the queer community around the world for many reasons—specifically in how she helps pave the way for the gay female artists that come after her.

Though some female artists in mainstream media have been brave enough recently to come out as bisexual, very few have identified as lesbian, perhaps largely due to the discrimination they could face. Though queerness has its stigma in society, it is specifically the “lesbian” label that has a strict stereotype that many people do not wish to be associated with. In broader society, lesbians have commonly been either characterized as falling short of conventional beauty standards or sexually predatory—if they lean towards a butch appearance—or unfairly sexualized and entirely invalid in the case that they may be more feminine. However, with Rapp’s aligning herself with being a lesbian—and her proudly flaunting her identity in her music and on the European leg of the Snow Hard Feelings tour—those negative connotations of the label can hopefully be corrected and allow more young sapphic to feel comfortable with their own sexuality.

At OLUV, we want to honor the message of empowerment that Rapp embodies in her performance and music; her courage is something that we hope to pass on to all of our customers in need of guidance and confidence to be themselves. In that spirit, we recommend our TRIANGEL collection, which was specially made to channel both feminine and masculine expressions of queer love into intricate, detailed pieces of jewelry. The TRIANGEL Love & Bonding Earrings, Love & Bonding Ring, and the Pearl Necklace in particular come together as a beautiful set for wearers to celebrate their sexuality without worrying about stereotypes, stigma, or discrimination. You just need to be brave and be yourself—let OLUV JEWELRY’s Angel series take care of the rest, offering you protection and redemption from the angels.
